September Program by Gina Jonas: A Born-Again Calligrapher
Gina, author of Calligraphy as Art and Meditation, shown below, will give a 90-minute demo/lecture via Zoom. She will share a recent PowerPoint she created for the guild she helped found (and for which she served as first president). The topic was the inspirations - the books, teachers and students - that helped her discover the treasures of calligraphy, as well as the direct experiences that developed her passion for teaching calligraphy as an art and a practice. The "demo" will be some "hands on" exercises interspersed with the slides and talk. She wants her presentation to be as meaningful as possible for us!
In her own words: "In this PowerPoint talk, with hands-on exercises (!), it will be a pleasure to share some inspirations I've received from teachers, classes, my research with original manuscripts, as well as some discoveries I made in the learning process! There will be examples from my career as a freelance calligrapher (41 years!), and from the books I've published in both Roman and Hebrew writing traditions. I'll trace my path from an obsession with personal independence to a dedication to calligraphy itself. It happened gradually, as calligraphy became a path to living letters--ones infused with the vital qualities of movement, energy, rhythm, and feeling--it also enhanced my own vitality! I sincerely believe that calligraphy has cultural relevance, and that it can be an art for our time. I hope you'll join me!"
Please bring:
1. two soft artist's pencils: 4B or 6B
2. a ballpoint pen
3. a large tablet 11x17, or thereabouts, preferably with some tooth
4. a Conte crayon, or piece of chalk (about 1" in length)
5. a portable slant board/writing desk, or drawing board to place in your lap. You can use the tablet as padding, or pad the surface with a few sheets of paper if you'd rather use single sheets for the exercises
I'd also like to invite members to view my website, www.ginajonascalligrapher.com. On the Publications page you'll find an article on setting up a writing board: "Nib Contact: a case for a touch-sensitive writing board."
